The Marion County Chamber held its annual Banquet Saturday night, and representatives of the City and County were on hand to provide a “State of the City”, “State of the County” remarks.

Marion County Judge Leward LaFleur kicked off the remarks speaking about future broadband access, state of the Tornado Relief fund, and reminding attendees of his “open door” policy for other questions or concerns about the county. Alderman for Ward 3 April Taylor Johnson spoke briefly on behalf of the City and how working together can ensure the City continues grow and prosper.

Sheriff David Capps and JPD Chief Florentino Perez provided information on crime. Perez focused on how different crime rates are dropping across the city and offering to setup more crime awareness and self defense seminars.

Award winners for the evening include:

  • Historic Preservation Award: Historic Jefferson Museum as Runner Up with Alan and Teresa Ponder claimed the title for their work in perseverance in retaining the Historic state of this city and county. An Honorary Award was given to Paul Harrell.
  • Non-Profit of the Year: Runner up was F.R.E.S.H. and Jefferson Adopt-A-Cop and M.C.D.C.S.C.O. tied for the title. The award is given for going beyond the limit of community service and giving back to this city and county
  • Chamber Ambassador of the Year: Runner Up was Janet Moore, and Peggy Walker received the award for distinguished contributions towards Chamber operations and events.
  • Lifetime Achievement Award: Runner Up was John Taylor, and John Cooper received the honor for a lifetime of distinguished contributions to this community of Jefferson and Marion County
  • Business Person of the Year: Alan and Teresa Ponder received Runner Up with Stephen Joseph earning the title for excelling in business and giving back to this community
  • New Business of the Year: went to 1852 on Austin with Art on the Bayou as Runner Up
  • Citizen of the Year: is Colleen Taylor for her contribution of growth and welfare to our community through her work on the Jefferson Visitor’s Bureau. April Taylor Johnson received the Runner Up position.

Jefferson’s Shady Ladies “interrupted” the evenings activities to promote their annual dances in downtown to raise funds for Shriner’s hospital in Shreveport.

The banquet was held at the Jefferson Visitors Center and catered by Bear Creek Smokehouse. Jim Kale acted as Master of Ceremonies.
